Free Ports
Danzig was a free state under League of Nations protection from 1920 until 1939, when it was incorporated into Greater Germany. After the war, danzig (Gdansk) became part of Poland.
Fiume was orginally hungarian. It was occupied by the Allies during 1918-19 and became a free state in 1919. It was annexed by Italy in 1924 and eventually ceded to Yugoslavia in 1947 (now known as Rijeka, in Croatia).
Memel, the seaport and hinterland on the Baltic, was formerly German but came under Allied control following the Great War. The port was captured by Lithuania in 1923 and returned to Germany in 1939. Since 1945, Memel has been part of Lithuania.
Trieste. After the Second World War, the Free Territory of Trieste was created on the frontier between Italy and Yugoslavia. In 1954, the Territory was divided between these two countries and the overprint issues were superseded by Italian and Yugoslav stamps.
